Merit-based grants are commonly state-based. Different from need-based Federal Government grants, these grants require academic performance, sometimes in combination with financial needs, awarding students with certain GPAs and income levels with free college funds. Usually state grants require a separate application form, but they may also require you have completed and filled the FAFSA.

Possibly some programs of state grants will require extra forms of documentation besides these.

Although a student doesn't have to be a genius to qualify for one, usually, merit-based grants carry some level of prestige with them, which means an extra benefit. This benefit can be noticed later on, once he is in the job market, mentioning he qualified and received this merit-based grant.

Most states offer merit based grants to resident students with qualifying GPAs.

Finally the students have to know that there are different possibilities if they are intending seriously to obtain a college degree and money is an obstacle. Usually each state offers its own suite of college grants. Students should explore their state's higher education website for need and merit-based grants. They offer more help than students generally think.

Another site the student can search in is the FAFSA website.

There are also federally-funded work-study FWS (Federal Work-Study) programs. These programs help students earn financial funding through a part-time work program. It is based on financial need and students must fill the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and they must wait to be accepted into the program to qualify.

To apply for this program is possible for undergraduate, graduate and second bachelor's degree students. Earnings the students obtain by this program must be used to pay the educationally related expenses. The FWS program, by the other hand, helps to ensure that college students who are truly in need of the money get the jobs.

Every student that is in having financial trouble to continue with post secondary education should check with the current requirements for FAFSA, there are a lot of possibilities.
